Pennsylvania Academic Competition Week

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives has unanimously approved a resolution introduced by Rep. Sam Rohrer (R-Berks) marking the week of April 20 through April 24 as "Pennsylvania Academic Competition Week."

From Rohrer's office:

The House's adoption of the resolution coincides with the beginning of the 18th annual Pennsylvania Academic Competition Week, which will conclude on Friday when students from across Pennsylvania will travel to Harrisburg to compete against each other in an academic contest.

"It is an honor to support this worthy initiative," Rohrer said. "The future of every free society rests in the minds and hearts of its young people. Liberty is at all times only one generation away from extinction. This event showcases the intellectual talents of tomorrow's leaders, who will one day carry forward the torch of American progress."

Each year, Rohrer authors and introduces a resolution officially establishing the last full week in April as Pennsylvania Academic Competition Week. Chester County Intermediate Unit organizes the event, which Rohrer has hosted for the last 11 years.

This year's Capitol competition will take place on Friday, April 24. Previous competitions have drawn more than 100 students. The championship team will receive a $2,000 scholarship for its high school and will have the opportunity to participate in the Panasonic Academic Challenge at Disney World in Florida in June.

Students will compete based on their knowledge in the following areas:

· Literature, fine arts and grammar.

· World history and geography.

· American history, geography and economics.

· Science.

· Contemporary events.

· Potpourri (any subject).
