Editorial: Pa. property tax is root of evil in school funding

From an editorial in The Pottstown Mercury:
Gov. Tom Corbett is not the real culprit in the schools funding crisis, although his refusal to acknowledge the problem adds to the frustration. Even the current legislators are not wholly to blame, even though they hold the power to fix it.

The inequity in Pennsylvania public schools funding is rooted in a flawed system of taxation that predates anyone now in office. The need for property tax reform has been bandied about in Harrisburg for decades, but no governor or Legislature in our lifetime has touched it.

AHEPA Mobilizes to Help Humanitarian Relief Efforts for People of Greece

WASHINGTON - The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), a leading membership-based association for the nation's three million American citizens of Greek heritage and Philhellenes, will mobilize its chapters, and work in cooperation with the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), to help with humanitarian relief efforts for the people of Greece, announced Supreme President Dr. John Grossomanides.

"The humanitarian crisis in Greece is dire,” Dr. Grossomanides said. “This is an opportunity to answer a clarion call to help the people of Greece. We appeal to Greek American organizations and the community at large to answer the call."

How AHEPA Will Help

  • Identifying private sector/corporate partners to donate medical supplies.
  • Making available its 501(c)(3) AHEPA Foundation, Inc. to receive contributions that will directly pay for the shipment and acquisition of medical supplies and food.
  • Mobilizing AHEPA Greece chapters to liaison with the Greek Ministry of Education to execute a food voucher program for schools.
  • Partner with International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) to assist with acquisition of medical supplies and food.
  • Mobilizing AHEPA family chapters.
  • Outreaching to all Greek American organizations asking them to contribute financially to AHEPA’s program.
    • Funds will go directly to pay for the shipment and acquistion of medical supplies and food.

"AHEPA's inquiry into how the organization could assist for a national level began October 2011," said Dr. Grossomanides, who is also leveraging his professional relationships in the pharmaceutical industry to seek assistance. "AHEPA examined the logistical challenges to providing aid efficiently and cost-effectively to those in need with meetings with the IOCC and the Embassy of Greece in Washington and came to the conclusion that this was the best course of action. In the interim, our fourteen chapters in Greece have been providing critical services to their respective communities whether it has been purchasing medical supplies or equipment for hospitals or feeding the needy."

He added, "We look forward to working in partnership with the IOCC, an extremely effective relief organization, to assist with the acquisition of medical supplies and food."

Charlotte Chapter Donates $5,000 to AHEPA Foundation, Inc.

AHEPA Marathon Chapter 2, Charlotte, N.C., has answered the call to help by making a $5,000 donation to AHEPA Foundation, Inc. that will directly pay for the shipment and acquisition of medical supplies and food. The chapter made the presentation to Supreme President Dr. Grossomanides at an event held in Charlotte, Saturday, February 11, 2011.

Sen. Toomey: Obama budget: an 'abdication of leadership'

U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) today released the following statement on President Obama’s budget fiscal year 2013 request:
“During the past year, I have focused on two vital priorities – restoring economic growth and private sector job creation, and putting our federal government on a sustainable fiscal path,” Sen. Toomey said. “Unfortunately, the president’s budget request fails on both counts.

“After three consecutive years of trillion-dollar-plus deficits, this budget request contains massive levels of spending and projects a $1.3 trillion budget deficit for this year – an even bigger deficit than last year. In addition to more wasteful stimulus programs, the president’s budget raises taxes on job creators at a time when we should be reforming our tax code with lower tax rates and a broader tax base to encourage more economic growth and job creation.

"Finally, the president fails to make the necessary reforms to truly fix our entitlement programs, which are, by his own admission, the main drivers of our deteriorating fiscal outlook. Medicare and Medicaid are both growing at unsustainable rates – much faster than our economy. The president knows it, and yet, he refuses to support the structural reforms to put these programs on a sustainable path. This is a tragic abdication of presidential responsibility.”

Gerlach blasts Obama budget

Congressman Jim Gerlach (PA-6th District) issued the following statement on Monday after President Obama unveiled a $3.8 trillion budget proposal for the 2013 Fiscal Year, which begins on October 1st. The President’s plan forecasts another $1.33 trillion deficit and calls for raising taxes by $1.9 trillion to fuel government spending:
"The President should have released this budget on Groundhog Day because it is a repeat of his previous three budget proposals: higher taxes, more debt and no real solutions for eliminating wasteful Washington spending. It is extremely disappointing that the President seems eager to accelerate America's descent down the same path as Greece and other European nations that have refused to confront their unsustainable spending habits. Four consecutive years of $1 trillion budget deficits, and raising taxes by $1.9 trillion, will not help the nearly 13 million Americans out of work find jobs or encourage greater investment and innovation needed to help businesses of all sizes grow. Furthermore, the President has once again abdicated his leadership responsibility to offer meaningful and constructive proposals for reforming Medicare and Medicaid so these programs are there for future generations.”

Obama's Budget By The Numbers | RNC: Republican National Committee | GOP

Rep. Joe Pitts reacts to latest Obama deficit budget

President Obama unveiled a $3.8 trillion budget for the 2013 fiscal year that begins on Oct. 1. The spending plan projects a $1.3 trillion deficit for the coming year and an increase in the national debt of more than $10 trillion over the next 10 years.

Rep. Joe Pitts, a Republican who represents Pennsylvania's 16th Congressional District, issued the following statement today on President Obama budget
:
“Three years ago, the President promised to cut annual deficits in half by the end of his first administration. Today’s budget shows that he is far from accomplishing that goal. This budget raises taxes by nearly $2 trillion and still fails to come even close to balancing within the next decade.

“While the President says his budget will create an ‘economy built to last,’ trillion dollar deficits are no foundation for the future. We cannot have a healthy economy when our debt outpaces growth.

“The American people deserve an honest debate on the best way to balance the budget. Unfortunately, the President’s budget is not a serious plan for debt reduction. Also, for a third year in a row, the Democratic-led Senate will not even attempt to pass a budget. By contrast, House Republicans will again put forward a budget that puts us back on the right track.”

Gas prices rise 90% under Obama

The price of regular unleaded gas was $1.85 when Barack Obama took office. The price of regular unleaded hit $3.65 today in SE Pennsylvania. That's a 90% increase. Credit Obama's failed economic and energy polices for the dramatic increase in gas prices, which is a devastating tax on the middle class. And where's the outcry from the mainstream media about skyrocketing gas prices?

Komen supporters can’t forgive, forget abortion funding

Did I miss the announcement that a cure for cancer has been found?

Why else would a leading charity created to raise money to find a cure for breast cancer be giving its donations to Planned Parenthood, the largest provider of abortions in the United States?

Many donors to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure breast cancer charity are vowing never to give another cent to the group because of its pro-abortion stance.

P.S. - There are many other worthwhile cancer charities that do funnel donations to Planned Parenthood.

Sen. Toomey: Obama's Warped Sense of Fairness

By Sen. Pat Toomey

As a parent, I try to teach my three children the value of fairness. My wife and I encourage them to work hard and enjoy their successes. Children being children, they sometimes try to test the limits of this system. When they break the rules or attempt to skate by without effort, we try to teach them that there are consequences for their actions. We all know that “life isn’t fair” but my wife and I believe — and want our children to believe — that their perseverance and resolve will pay off in the end.

So when the president called for fairness in his State of the Union address last week, I wanted to embrace the theme. Who doesn’t like fairness? But I was disappointed to learn that President Obama has an altogether different definition of fairness.

In his speech, the president argued for achieving fairness by using the government to exact punishment on people who have done nothing wrong and have broken no rules. Instead, his only criterion for exacting punishment is success. In the name of fairness, he called for higher taxes on those who have been deemed to make too much money and on risk takers who invest in our economy.

The president’s vision of fairness is defined by his fundamental faith in government. Government certainly has a role to play in creating an environment conducive to wealth creation and success and punishing those who break the rules. But instead of allowing people to rise and fall on their own merits, the president believes that Washington should be picking winners and losers based on his own political judgment. During the past three years, he has practiced this notion of fairness to the detriment of the American people and our economy.

Was it fair to bail out the big banks and some of the auto companies on the backs of their competitors and the American taxpayer? Was it fair to pile up trillions of dollars in debt, forcing our children and grandchildren to pay for our mistakes down the road? Was it fair to dump $500 million of taxpayer dollars in a nearly bankrupt Solyndra? Is it fair to reject the Keystone XL pipeline project which will create thousands of jobs at the behest of a few environmental special-interest groups?

The president’s concept of fairness does not appear to be very fair or consistent. It is an ever shifting concept that is defined by the maxim that government knows best.

The traditional American notion of fairness means giving people an opportunity to succeed, and when they do, allowing them to enjoy the fruits of their hard work. When rules are broken, the rule breakers need to be held accountable — no matter who they are and no matter who they know.

Under this notion of fairness, American companies should have the ability to compete with their foreign competitors by lowering one of the world’s highest tax rates — rates that encourage our companies to move overseas. Instead of punishing companies who go to more business friendly climates, let’s remove the regulatory and tax burdens that make America a needlessly challenging place to do business. Instead of investing American tax dollars in failing companies such as Solyndra, let’s help Americans keep more of their hard-earned money and make decisions about how to spend and invest their money themselves.

I want my children to grow up believing that if they work hard, study hard and play by the rules, they can achieve their dreams. I don’t want them to look to government for approval, for permission to be successful, or for subsidies or bailouts.

America’s greatness doesn’t lie in Washington. It doesn’t depend on the maze of government bureaucracies that carries out the president’s edicts. Our greatness and our spirit lies in the people of the towns and cities like the ones I visit in Pennsylvania, where people work hard on their farms, in their factories and in their businesses. Pennsylvanians are capable of unimaginable successes — if only the government will step back and let them.

Sen. Pat Toomey is a Republican who represents Pennsylvania in the U.S. Senate.
