'My Life in Ruins' opens Friday

Nia Vardalos wrote and starred in one of the biggest box-office hits of all time, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding." The 2002 sleeper hit, produced for just $5 million, grossed $241 million in the U.S. alone.

Unfortunately for Vardalos, the Greek-American actress was not able to capitalize on her new-found fame. A 2003 TV spin-off of the hit film was canceled by CBS after just 7 episodes and her feature film follow-up, 2004's "Connie and Carla," co-starring Toni Collette and David Duchovny, flopped.

Seven years after her breakthrough hit, Vardalos may strike gold again with a new film, "My Life in Ruins." The trailer looks terrific. Returning to the "Greek" theme may be what Vardalos needed. The film opens Friday.
