NPR claims a First Amendment right to subsidized speech: The First Amendment is very clear: “Congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.” Nowhere, though, does the First Amendment say that the press has an inherent right to have the government fund its free speech. Indeed, the Founding Fathers would have been horrified at the thought, because they understood that a government-funded press is anything but a “free” press.
