'Polar Bears' needed for New Year's Day plunge

If you're interested in taking off most of your clothes and jumping into some icy waters, then Pottstown is the place for you on Jan. 1, 2010.

POTTSTOWN — If the polar ice caps continue to melt, the namesake white bears who will be displaced are certainly welcome in Pottstown — at least on New Year's Day.
The call has been issued for all polar bears, real or otherwise, to join those gathered Jan. 1 in Pottstown's Riverfront Park for the annual leap into the welcoming waters of the Schuylkill River.
Yes, you read that right. Organizers are looking for people who want to jump into the river.
In January.
No, that's not a joke.

In fact, last year, 57 brave souls did it, leaping into the 32.8-degree water before an adoring throng of 300 or more in order to prove — well, something.
