George F. Will: Obama hits a wall in Berlin
George Will Obama eviscerates in his latest column:
Obama's vanity is a wonder of the world that never loses its power to astonish, but really: Is everyone in his orbit too lost in raptures of admiration to warn him against delivering a speech soggy with banalities and bromides in a city that remembers John Kennedy's "Ich bin ein Berliner" and Ronald Reagan's "Tear down this wall"? With German Chancellor Angela Merkel sitting nearby, Obama began his Berlin speech: "As I’ve said, Angela and I don't exactly look like previous German and American leaders." He has indeed said that, too, before, at least about himself. It was mildly amusing in Berlin in 2008, but hardly a Noel Coward-like witticism worth recycling. His look is just not that interesting. And after being pointless in Berlin, neither is he, other than for the surrealism of his second term.George F. Will: Obama hits a wall in Berlin
IRS needs a good housecleaning
From the editorial page of The Pottstown Mercury:
THORNS to the Internal Revenue Service for plans to hand out millions of dollars in employee bonuses even though the administration has ordered bonuses curtailed because of spending cuts. The IRS is preparing to pay $70 million in employee bonuses claiming legal obligations under a union contract. Sen. Chuck Grassley says the bonuses should have been canceled under an April directive from the White House budget office. This comes on top of recent revelations about IRS exorbitant spending on conference stays for employees in luxury hotel suites. And, that came after it was revealed agents had improperly targeted conservative groups for scrutiny regarding tax-exempt status. It seems pretty clear that the IRS is the agency that needs some extra scrutiny and a good housecleaning.Roses for Sandy fundraiser; thorns for IRS bonuses

Wall Street Journal confirms Obamacare death panels
Turns out Sarah Palin (and others) were right about Obamacare.
Government bureaucrats will decide whether you live or die once the
federal government takes control of the nation's health-care system.
From The Wall Street Journal:
From The Wall Street Journal:
Signs of ObamaCare's failings mount daily, including soaring insurance costs, looming provider shortages and inadequate insurance exchanges. Yet the law's most disturbing feature may be the Independent Payment Advisory Board. The IPAB, sometimes called a "death panel," threatens both the Medicare program and the Constitution's separation of powers. At a time when many Americans have been unsettled by abuses at the Internal Revenue Service and Justice Department, the introduction of a powerful and largely unaccountable board into health care merits special scrutiny.Read the full story at the newspaper's website.

Pa. politicians stuff faces at public trough
From the editorial page of The Pottstown Mercury:
THORNS to Pennsylvania legislators who continue to fleece beleaguered taxpayers with a practice known as per diems, a constitutionally-questionable system where lawmakers submit unvouchered expenses for meals and lodging on top of their generous salaries. An investigation by reporters Brad Bumsted and Mike Wereschagin of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review found that lawmakers increase their requests for reimbursement dramatically as the state fiscal year comes to a close each June. In other words, lawmakers want to make sure they don't leave any scraps behind as they empty the cupboards before heading on their annual three-month vacations. During a five-day period in 2012 when House leaders spent $64,000 on catered meals, legislators still claimed $105,000 in per diems, according to state records compiled by the Tribune-Review. In 2011, House leaders bought almost $23,000 in food over three days but members claimed nearly $60,000 in per diems, records show. How much catered food can these "public servants" possibly consume? "The bank gets robbed every day with these guys," Joe Poniewaz, 66, a retired Pittsburgh police officer, told the newspaper. If history is any guide, legislators will spend more money on themselves this month — about $400,000 — than any other in 2013, the newspaper reported. Pennsylvania legislators have a base salary of $83,802. That's twice as much as the average taxpayer is bringing home. And that's more than enough to cover their lavish meals without having to stick taxpayers with the bill.Roses to cleanup volunteers and local growers

Diana West: No Constitution, no borders, no USA
Columnist Diana West on how the U.S. can stop domestic terrorist threats from radical Muslims:
If our leaders really wanted to prevent “another 9/11,” they would have long ago admitted the obvious: that the world of Islam, from its terrorists to its kings, is engaged in the latest historical cycle of jihad to extend the reach of Islamic law (sharia). They would have decided that “profiling” isn’t worse than terrorism. They would have halted Islamic immigration not only to stop more jihad cells from forming but also to prevent Constitution-endangering, pro-sharia demographics from forming, too. They would have sharply curtailed travel, and particularly return travel from jihad nations such as Chechnya and Pakistan. They would have long ago blocked U.S. institutions, including colleges, media organizations and banks, from accepting millions of dollars from sharia-ruled dictatorships. They would have closed down mosques in America where jihad is preached and supported.
Above all, they would have secured our borders rather than leave them open all these post-9/11 years. Of course, that would mean re-establishing and defending those borders, both literally and figuratively.Diana West: No Constitution, no borders, no USA

Obamacare coverage may be unaffordable for low-wage workers
From The Associated Press:
It's called the Affordable Care Act, but President Barack Obama’s health care law may turn out to be unaffordable for many low-wage workers, including employees at big chain restaurants, retail stores and hotels.Obamacare coverage may be unaffordable for low-wage workers
That might seem strange since the law requires medium-sized and large employers to offer "affordable" coverage or face fines.

Thorns for IRS excess spending
From the editorial page of The Pottstown Mercury:
THORNS to the already-besieged Internal Revenue Service for participating in a $4.1 million training conference featuring luxury rooms and free drinks. A total of 132 IRS officials received room upgrades at the 2010 conference in Anaheim, Calif., according to a report by an inspector general for tax administration. One official stayed five nights in a room that regularly goes for $3,500 a night, the report said, and another stayed four nights in a room that regularly goes for $1,499 a night. Without the upgrades, the IRS could have negotiated a lower room rate, as required by agency procedures. The inspector general’s report was surfacing as the IRS came under fire again in connection with its targeting of conservative groups during the 2010 and 2012 elections. In all, the IRS held 225 employee conferences from 2010 through 2012, at a total cost of $49 million, the report said. Add outrageous spending to the sins of a government agency already known for its arrogance.Thorns for IRS excess spending; roses to PennDOT for trail cover
