This event is tremendously important to our efforts. We need to demonstrate to the Governor and to the Harrisburg lawmakers, in the most passionate manner possible, that we have had enough of ineffective property tax “relief” measures and that we will only settle for the complete elimination of this onerous and unfair tax through the enactment of House Bill 1776 and Senate Bill 1400, the Property Tax Independence Act.
If you believe in and support the total elimination of the school property tax through the Property Tax Independence Act your attendance at this rally is vital!
This will be a major media event that will help to publicize far and wide the news of the Property Tax Independence Act. Masses of taxpayers will make a huge impression, so please make every effort to be present for this historic rally. Bring your friends and neighbors, arrange car pools, spread the word as widely as possible, and do all you can to show your support. It's official. A 30-year Democrat by the name of Tom Smith will be the Republican candidate to challenge incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Bob Casey Jr.
Smith, who billed himself as a "conservative," defeated the Republican Party-endorsed Steve Welch, who finished third in a five-man race.
Party leaders were quick to embrace Smith under the Republican big tent.
U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) released the following statement supporting Smith:
"I'd like to congratulate Tom Smith on a hard-fought victory and endorse his candidacy. Tom is a self-made man from humble origins who understand the value of hard work. His understanding of job creation and his vast private sector experience is exactly what our government needs right now. I look forward to supporting his candidacy in the coming months."
Republican Party of Pennsylvania Chairman Rob Gleason issued the following statement:
"I congratulate U.S. Senate candidate Tom Smith, Attorney General candidate David Freed, Auditor General candidate John Maher, and State Treasurer candidate Diana Irey Vaughan for their victories tonight and we are excited to help elect them in November."
"We have an incredible Republican grassroots network in Pennsylvania and I am excited to unite and focus on delivering big wins for our entire Republican team. We look forward to supporting Mitt Romney and all of our Republican candidates as we keep Pennsylvania red in November."
No word on Gov. Tom Corbett's reaction to Welch's embarrassing defeat.
Corbett, according to sources, insisted the party back Welch over better-known candidates like former state Rep. Sam Rohrer, who finished second in Tuesday's voting.
The Welch debacle is the latest political kiss of death involving Gov. Corbett, who has a habit of backing losing candidates.

Voter turnout in my Pennsylvania precinct was the lowest in 20 years. I was the only voter in the municipal building at 1 p.m. and nobody was behind me when I left. One of the poll workers said it's been like that all day. And for those Democrats concerned that the state's new Voter ID law would create delays, it took 5 seconds to show a photo ID before I could cast my vote.

Tony Phyrillas to speak Friday at Montgomery County Community College
Tony Phyrillas, The Mercury's award-winning political columnist and blogger, will be the featured speaker at the Seventh Annual Healthy Lifestyles Expo Friday, April 20, at Montgomery County Community College, 101 College Drive, in Pottstown.Phyrillas, pictured here with state Rep. Abortion lobby targets GOP candidate in 134th House Dist.
Voters in Lehigh and Berks counties should be aware that the Planned Parenthood abortion-on-demand lobby is spending heavily to influence a state legislative race in an attempt to intimidate anti-abortion candidates.
Voters should be concerned that out-of-state special interests are running a propaganda campaign to prevent the Legislature from enacting tighter controls over abortions in Pennsylvania in the wake of the Philadelphia abortion clinic scandal.
Republican Ryan Mackenzie is the reform candidate for the 134th House District seat formerly held by Rep. Doug Reichley.

If you're wondering why nothing changes in Harrisburg, here's an interesting fact reported by The Associated Press: 10 state senators and 85 state representatives face no opposition in the April 24 primary election, and the other 133 districts will in most cases be contested only in November. Just four sitting senators and 28 incumbent representatives have an opponent in the primary.

According to the 2011 annual report on White House staff, female employees earned a median annual salary of $60,000, which was about 18 percent less than the median salary for male employees ($71,000).
Calculating the median salary for each gender required some assumptions to be made based on the employee names. When unclear, every effort was taken to determine the appropriate gender.

NRC schedules meeting on Limerick nuclear plant safety
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled an open house regarding the agency’s annual assessment of safety performance for Exelon Nuclear’s Limerick Generating Station.The open house is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18, at the Limerick Township Municipal Building, 646 W. Ridge Pike, Limerick.
The public will have an opportunity to learn from NRC staff members about the plant’s safety performance during 2011 and the NRC’s oversight of the facility. Attendees will have the opportunity to discuss plant-related topics on a one-on-one basis with NRC inspectors assigned to the plant and their NRC Region I supervisor.

According to the NRC, the Limerick plant operated safely during 2011. Regarding Unit 1, all findings were of very low safety significance). Therefore, for the rest of 2012, Limerick Unit 1 will receive the very detailed inspection regime used by the NRC or plants that are operating well.
Limerick Unit 2, however, will receive additional oversight from the agency this year as a result of receiving a “white” (low-to-moderate safety significance) inspection finding involving inadequate procedures related to the operation of two main feedwater system valves.
“Our expectation is that Exelon will thoroughly address the issues that contributed to the ‘white’ inspection finding finalized for Limerick late last year. Ensuring that occurs will be a focus for the NRC in 2012,” NRC Region I Administrator Bill Dean said. “Looking back on 2011, our inspectors spent time checking on whether there were any immediate safety concerns at U.S. nuclear power plants following the March events at the Fukushima Daiichi facility in Japan. Those reviews indicated the plants remained safe for continued operation.”
An NRC team inspection is planned for the week of June 11 at the plant to review the company’s root cause and contributing cause evaluation for the problems; its assessment of potential similar issues; and its corrective actions to prevent a recurrence.
In 2011, the NRC devoted approximately 5,260 hours of inspection to the Limerick plant under its normal reviews.
Routine inspections are carried out by the two NRC resident inspectors assigned to the plant and by inspection specialists from the agency’s Region I Office in King of Prussia.
Among the areas of performance at Limerick to be inspected this year by NRC specialists are activities associated with radiological safety, the plant’s problem identification and resolution program, emergency preparedness and the facility’s implementation of a voluntary industry initiative to address potential degradation of underground piping.

The Pennsylvania House of Representatives voted 140-to-49 Wednesday cut its own chamber from 203 seats to 153, and reduce the state Senate from 50 members to 38. Is there something in the water in Harrisburg? Why would 140 politicians agree to possibly eliminate their own jobs? I have a bad feeling this bill will never make it out of the Senate.
